The Good, The Bad, and The Illegal Outdoor Lighting Fixtures! Examples of outdoor lighting fixtures in Southern Arizona that are good choices, bad or poor choices, and ones that are Illegal (violate County or City lighting codes). Obtrusive lights that you believe are illegal can be reported for investigation. Print out a Complaint Form and mail to SA-IDA as instructed on the bottom of the form.
Good - In general, all fixtures (except Mercury Vapor) that have full cut off shields and are properly selected &installed so all the light shines downward. Turn on outdoor lights only when needed and use only the amount of light needed. ** Review IDA List of some Good Outdoor Lighting Fixtures (list)
Bad or Poor Choices - In general, all fixtures that produce Glare, Light Trespass, or Sky Glow and ones that output way more light than required to adequately light the intended area. Many Bad or Poor installations can be modified to be acceptable or Good.
