MINUTES FOR SOUTHERN ARIZONA-INTERNATIONAL DARK-SKY ASSOCIATION (SA-IDA) Meeting called to order at 1730 hours, 14 August 2002. 1. June minutes were read and approved by the members present. 2. No treasurer's report was given but there is approximately $950 in SA-IDA's account. 3. Project Astro. Two representatives were at the last TAAA meeting and talked about the project and current plans and roll-out for 2002/03 school year. 4. Excellence in outdoor lightning to be awarded to STARIZONA on 29 August 2002. 5. Our acting president was on a Green Valley radio station speaking about lighting issues pertaining to Green Valley. 6. It was discovered in the July trip that three outdoor lights sold by Home Depot on Oracle were not up to code for the city of Tucson, Pima County, Oro Valley, or Marana. A letter of complaint was sent to the city of Tucson on 1 August 2002. A copy was sent to the store manage as well. No response as of the August meeting. It was suggested by a member present that the corporate offices for Home Deport in Atlanta be notified as well. Copies to local political officials discussed also. The September SA-IDA meeting will be another field trip. 7. Information on light pollution at local star parties, meetings, and speaking engagements in the form of a brochure or fact sheet which would be handed out was discussed. It was suggested that an IDA member with a telescope could be at the star parties showing celestial objects in a clear sky as well as a light polluted sky. This light polluted sky could be produced by nearby light such as a flashlight. 8. The University of Arizona is to redo the lighting for the women's softball field. A neighborhood resident was present to voice concern on how this was to be done. When the swimming pools were first lit, the lighting was very poor. Retrofitting was done, and the lighting improved. If the softball field is done correctly it will save time and money and the night sky. We have the name of an individual to contact. 9. No updates on the Bob Goff fund and the glare busters, the lighting at Three Points, or the sky brightness/darkness meter. 10.The Audubon Society has sent SA-IDA a letter inviting us to join in a program with them at one of their meetings. This would be a great opportunity for an any local IDA member was is both an amateur astronomer and birder. 11. Report from IDA. A student in Flagstaff is making an inventory of lighting there. No update on billboards. 12. Media publicity for SA-IDA. Contact local TV and radio stations, newspapers, good lighting awards, and newsletters. About 40,000 Safeway employees will read about the award given to a local Safeway store. 13. Need to create a phone tree. 14. Webmaster for SA-IDA's web site seeks concert examples of poor lighting, good lighting, costs of different types of lighting, savings, ideas for accomplishing our goals, where the energy comes from for lighting, etc. Complaint forms can be downloaded using Word, Wordperfect, and PDF also. 15. Public forum on Ironwood National Monument. SA-IDA could help by outlining how bad lighting could affect the monument and wildlife. 16. Meeting adjourned 1915. Resentfully submitted, Dick West
