Meeting Minutes - April 9, 2003 Southern Arizona Section of The International Darksky Association (SA-IDA) Meeting called to order at 1730 by V-Pres John. Members present were John, Byron, Robert and Joe. Numbers below correspond to Agenda items. Numbers not listed were not discussed. 1. Minutes from March were not read but no changes were requested, approved as written. 2. Treasure's report, balance about $1,100 but some outstanding expenses have not been turned in for reimbursement. 4. Review of our by-laws and election of officers - postpone to next meeting. 5. Earth Day at the Uof A on the mall - Tuesday, April 22nd, 10 to 2 pm. John , Josie, and possibly Robert to set up a Dark Skies table. Starizona and Skyworks may be there with telescopes. 6. Border Patrol Lights. John has been working with Border Patrol officials to set up a time and place to give them their award sometime in May. Possible locations are Cascabel, Sonoita and/or Tucson. John will get a public announcement written and advise of the award date and location. 7. Ironwood Festival, May 3rd (Sat.) 2003, 3pm to 8pm, Mason Audubon Center, 8751 N. Thornydale Road.. John to see if Scott can work, Robert may be able to help from 3 to 6 pm, Joe can work from 6 to 8 pm. 8. Kartchner Star Party May 2nd (Fri.) and Sat May 3rd. John and Joe to take a Dark Skies display for Friday afternoon and evening (pizza party). John to give a talk on the moon. Don H. may be able to cover some of the crown Saturday by handing out brochures 10. New Lowes has lots of glare bombs for sale!!!!!! They carry the Cooper lighting line for outdoor lights. Cooper is introducing a new line of fully shielded outdoor lights which may be what is needed to be able to displace the unshielded ones from Lowe's shelves. Hopefully this will happen soon. 11. Light Pollution Meter (LPM) - Avery was not able to attend the meeting. He has a couple of requests to loan out the proto-type meters. Joe to email Avery to tell him to distribute the 5 meters as he sees fit in exchange for calibration and usage data and suggestions. 16. Tucson and Pima County Lighting Legislation, Arizona State legislation. Bills in the State Senate passed and sent to the House (shielded lights for all new installations on State buildings) where they have been assigned to committee. 18. TAAA Star Parties: Lots are happening and SA-IDA needs to figure out a way to have more representation at these parties. Possibly hire students to be there to hand out brochures, or recruit senior citizens to volunteer, or spouses of TAAA scope operators, or other ideas?. 19. Web site improvements: Our three Science Fair (SARSEF) winners and photo of their projects were posted on our web site. 22. New Business: Robert plans to give a presentation in November to his church group. There may be other groups looking for speakers at their meetings. John mentioned parking lot lights being changed out on half of the Safeway/Walgreens center at St. Marys and Silverbell Roads. Possible consideration for lighting award. Up-coming Events and Opportunities not discussed above for SA-IDA to have a display table and hand out brochures and discuss Dark Skies topics: * October 18th (Sat) - Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, TAAA star party (John to coordinate) * September 6th and 13th (Saturdays) - Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Special table in patio area (inside to the right) for SA-IDA Meeting adjourned 1900 hours.
