MINUTES SA-IDA MEETING NOVEMBER 13, 2002. 1. Meeting called to order at 1736 by John. Five members present. 2. Minutes from the October meeting were approved. 3. Treasurer's report. $1,026.54 in the SA-IDA checking account. About half is allocated. 4. Old business: SA-IDA doing well in giving out the excellence in lighting awards. None to be given out during the holiday seasons. The star party held at Booth Fickett school was a success. Frank Lopez of Stellar Visions painted the ceiling of one the rooms at the school. The lights were turned out, and the audience was thrilled by the site. A light was then turned on to demonstrate the adverse effects of light pollution. Outside the school were a number of examples of good and poor lighting. A glare blaster some distance from the school grounds was bright enough to cast shadows. Because of these outdoor lights it is hoped that the effects of light pollution can be shown at other star parties without any special equipment. 5. St. Francis church at 4625 E. River road will receive an excellence in lighting award at both services this coming Sunday. John will present the award. John, Jose, and Dick to be at a table between the services distributing light pollution material. Thirty dollars for refreshments was allocated as well. 6. Byron will set up a phone tree. John, Jose, Joe, and Dick to help as well. 7. No update on the sky brightness meter except Avery has given Joe minor changes in measurements for a couple of the components. 8. Lighting complaints. There have been several complaints against the Holiday Inn First Avenue and Oracle. Joe investigated and found that the inn's lighting is up to Oro Valley's code. Not much more can be done except perhaps to approach the staff and inform them of the good neighbor policy which would ask that all unnecessary lights be shut off. Another complaint was received concerning the lights at Houghton and Golf Links. There may be more lights than needed here. Follow up will need to be done. There was a request from Sonita for help concerning the lights being sold at Home Depot there. SA-IDA is still working on the lighting at the Home Depots in Tucson. The illegal lights are still on the shelf. Another letter will be sent to the City of Tucson. The City has not passed it's new lighting ordinance. Restricting the use of searchlights was also discussed. Joe will follow up on bad lighting at Chruch's Chicken and Little Ceasar's pizza, Ina and Magee. He will also investigate if permits are needed for the temporary lights seen at construction sites. 9. The December meeting will be a field trip to the University of Arizona. We have a guide for the tour. 10. License plates. Joe is putting together ideas for the frame which will have SDA-IDA attached to it in some fashion. They can be manufactured cheaply. The front plate or vanity plate will be about IDA. It will at least have IDA's web address on . it. The state legislature will be contacted next year about the rear license plate. 11. The Audubon Society has responded favorably about a joint meeting. A speaker knowledgeable in migratory animals and light pollution will be needed. 12. No IDA update but Joe did inform the members about PAG or Pima Association of Governments. A talk in front of this organization was discussed. 13. The SA-IDA website has about 500 hits and is linked to the IDA website. Joe stated there are problems with the Phoenix site. 14.There are several informative pamphlets which have published. These were available for review. 15.Meeting adjourned 1845. Respectfully submitted, Dick West
