Safeway Store Excellence in Outdoor Lighting Awards presented July 24, 2002 Safeway employees, Dark Sky members, neighbors, business owners, and astronomers gather for the awards presentation in the Safeway store at 10380 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ. All were very complimentary on a great job which eliminated a major source of Light Pollution in this part of Tucson.
John Polacheck, VP of the Southern Arizona Section of International Dark-Sky Association, presents awards to Katie Harris, Venture West Property Management, Marian Huber, Safeway Store Manager, and Anita Cohen, Safeway Public Affairs.
Existing Lighting Fixtures (about 20) were modified to have full cut-off shields attached around the bottom perimeter which eliminates glare and light trespass into adjacent businesses and neighborhoods. Also, a bottom lit store sign from the previous store (prior to Safeway conversion) was replaced with a internal lit Safeway sign which eliminated a huge amount of sky glow, glare, and light trespass. |
